chlorine or fluoride that you might have in your water and will get rid of
any impurities that might be in the sugar
2. Add the sugar and stir until the sugar is dissolved.
3. Let the hummingbird nectar cool
4. Fill your feeder and store any remaining nectar in the refrigerator.
You can keep your hummingbird nectar in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
You can also use a microwave to make the
hummingbird nectar recipe. You will
need a container that is microwave save to put the water in. Heat the water
to a boil, then take the water out of the microwave and stir in the sugar
until it is dissolved. Let the nectar cool and then fill your feeders and
store the remaining
hummingbird nectar recipe in the refrigerator.
That is all there is to it, there is no need to add anything else to the
hummingbird nectar recipe. Some people add honey, but honey will soon ferment and become
poisonous to the birds. Also you don’t need to add any red food coloring to
the hummingbird nectar recipe. The red on your hummingbird feeder will be
enough red to attract the hummingbirds. And some people believe that red
food coloring could also be harmful to the hummingbirds, so there’s no need
to add it at all.
Once the
hummingbird nectar recipe is in the feeder it must be changed if it becomes cloudy
or murky looking. Empty the feeder and rinse it out with hot water before
refilling. You will need to change the
hummingbird nectar recipe about twice a week under
normal conditions. If the temperature gets into the 80's you will have to
change it every two or three days. If in the 90's you should change it every
day. Hang your feeder in the shade if you can to make the nectar last longer
before going bad.
If you forget to change you nectar and black spots and mold appears on
you feeder it will have to be thoroughly cleaned. You will have to soak the
feeder in a bleach solution of 10% bleach and hot water for about a half an
hour.
