Use this hummingbird feed recipe to add to your hummingbird enjoyment by making your own hummingbird nectar. It’s quick and easy to make and you will save money also. And this hummingbird feed recipe only requires 2 common ingredients.

In the long run, this will help your nectar keep better once it’s in your hummingbird feeder.

After the hummingbird feed recipe is cool you can add it to your feeder. Any leftover nectar will keep in your frig for up to a week.

Don’t add any red food coloring to your hummingbird feed recipe, if your feeder is red that will be enough to attract hummingbirds. Some say red food coloring is harmful to hummingbirds so don’t use it. Tie some red ribbon to your feeder if you need more red to help attract hummingbirds.

This hummingbird feed recipe has taught you the quick, easy way to make homemade hummingbird nectar, now all you have to do is keep fresh nectar in your feeder.

The way to keep it fresh is to change it before it ferments and gets moldy. The air temperature outside will determine how often the nectar will have to be changed. Anytime the nectar starts to look cloudy, that’s an indication that it needs to be changed.

Below you will find a chart that will tell you when your nectar needs to be changed based on the temperature.

High temperatures…………Change nectar after

71-75……………………………6 days

76-80……………………………5 days

81-84……………………………4 days

85-88……………………………3 days

89-92……………………………2 days

93+………………………………change daily

Hummingbird Feeder maintenance tips:

1.  rinse out your hummingbird feeder with hot water each time you change the nectar.

2. once a week or so rinse it out with a 10% white vinegar and water solution.

3. once a month soak your feeder for an hour in a mild bleach solution (1/4 cup bleach to 1 gallon of water).

These preventive measures will keep your feeder clean provided that the nectar is changed on time.

If you forget to change the nectar and mold grows, you will have to soak your feeder for an hour in a stronger bleach solution (10% bleach 90% water).

After soaking, be sure to brush out all the dead mold in your feeder and rinse out all traces of the bleach solution using running water.

Here is a good set of feeder brushes that will help you remove the mold from the inside of your feeder.

There are feeders that you can buy that will make the task of cleaning a feeder a lot easier. Try to find a feeder that is easy to take apart and allows you to get inside the feeder to all those hard to reach areas that will need cleaning.
