Hummingbird moth Posted by: libgrl
Video duration: 83 seconds Cool footage of a White-lined Sphinx Moth (Hyles lineata) in my front yard the evening of 2007-04-11. It's often referred to as a hummingbird moth because it can easily be mistaken for a young hummingbird because it resembles hummingbirds in size and behavior. Related: hummingbird, nature, moth, insect, bug Display Video Comments | Hide Video Comments | Add Comment |

My wife and I have been watching two of these awesome insects returning to our patio at dusk every night here in SE Wa., thinking they were very small HB's supping from our potted flowers, only to discover from a very clear flash photo that they had antennae!!! She still can't believe how much they fooled us, as they are soooo fast... But still just as amazing to watch.

Imagine an elderly widow with slightly bad eyesight who delites at the glimpses she gets of Hummingbirds in her Garden....she goes out...sees 1 of these guys fluttering around "Oh My! Its a Hummingbird...How Wonderful!" Then to her amazement, the unthinkable happens...the 'hummingbird' lands on her hand!"Oh...Why this is Incredible...Ive never even heard of a Hummingbird landing on someones hand in the wild...what luck!" She brings her hand a bit closer only to discover...ANTENNA!!! *SCREAMS*

The caterpillars of Sphinx moths are disgusting. They're known as tomato worms, and they demolished my tomato plants this year. Yuck!

We live in SE Georgia USA and have seen these hummingbird moths many times. Just saw 4 different ones tonite: Completely red, completely rust color, striped tail and bumblebee stripes all over. They are very friendly and not afraid of humans and will "buzz" you. They seem to come to our Butterfly Bush around dusk and first dark of night.

carpenocterm66, I agree. Went I went to the sonoran desert museum in Arizona, I saw one. My mom and dad said it was a hummingbird, but I caught it and showed it to them.

There is a different sphinx moth called the Hummingbird Moth, which has clearer wings and a prettier body. The white-lined sphinx shown here can be pests as caterpillars, but the adult is so cool I would not begrudge it a tomato plant!

Hummingbird moths are the culprits in laying eggs on tomato plants that turn into tomato bugs, the ugly green things that attack tomato plants in the summer.
