Most of her superstructure is wood, but she is equupped with a modern fire suppression system, has military grade heat rise detectors. So true. Kids nowadays have so many choices and freedoms that they are no longer PUSHED beyond themselves. I remember being a kid and watching grown up movies and understanding most of what went on, and even liking them, but kids today are free to watch 100 channels on a TV in their own room. Wow! This was one of my favorite TV shows as a child. I remember telling my mom every Saturday night to wake me up before she was off to work so I could watch this show every Sunday morning at 6. Yes,the "out of tune sound" is called harmonic dissonance, this is what gives the calliope its interesting sound.

Was this instrument meant to be played with compressed air or steam? The neat thing with a steam calliope is that the tone and pitch of the pipe changes slightly as the air is displacec by the steam when a note is played, giving it a sound all of its own. Neat video! ADT

Nope....the Tangley Calliope is one key smaller. Joseph Ori's Calliope was never known as a Calliophone. That was a Tangley moniker. This unit, built in 1920 and patented in 1916, utilized a different keying system. The Tangleys are still being built to this day. There's only thirteen known original examples of this Calliope in the world.

Also, did you use an electronic tuner, or good old fashioned forks? I have seen all of your other videos. You should make more. Yes it is.... I had to build #26 whistle awhile back. Someone stole the original. I used 1 1/4" sink drain tubing for the pipe and chucked a piece of round brass for the orifice plate. The hardest part was maintaining perfect alignment between the lower and upper pipe. (Used a mandrel) then silver soldered the supports on the bottom part. Installed the 'O plate, then voiced the upper tube with the new adjustable plug. A lot more than what meets the eye, but it was successful. Seemyothervids.

I was thinking about just building d cut whistle mouths, instead of 360degree mouths. All of my sheet music is arranged for pedal organs, so I'll have to learn to lay down a bassline with my pinky finger.

I really don't know where to find Calliope music...most of what I play is in my head. (honestly) I find whats most easy to play on 44 keys and it goes from there. Mind you...I'm converting it from 88 keys to start with, then modify it down to 44 keys. As for doing what you say with the "plungers", tried that and almost squashed a whistle. I've designed a new plunger that will fit in the tube of the whistle. The old plunger is cut out of the whistle and the new plunger is inserted.

Built on 1920 by the Pneumatic Calliope Co. of Newark, NJ. It is a 44 key manually played affair that operates on low pressure air supplied by a Roots-Connerville Blower which is powered by a 1/2 hp. electric motor. This was a welcomed edition to the Long Island Antique Power Associations 2008 Summer Show and received great reviews.
